"For the Love of Jazz"-a celebration on Tuesday, September 20, of music and Omaha's place in the history of jazz. There will be morning workshops
and afternoon panel discussions.

All parts of the program will take place in the Ballroom in the Student
Center.

We only ask that those who wish to attend register, which may be done
with an email to me with the registrant's name and academic affiliation,
if there is one (your friends can come too): gwzach@creighton.edu.

Here's the program:

The morning workshops will run from 9 - 10:15 a.m. and again from 10:30
- 11:45 a.m.

The first workshop session will focus on the question "What Is Jazz?"
with each presenter giving his definition of the term with or without
musical demonstration. Victor Lewis, Omaha native, Rutgers University
faculty member, world-class drummer, and the son of musicians, will lead
the workshops. With Victor will be Richie Love from Omaha, son of the
legendary Preston Love and leader of Richie Love and the Love
Connection, Luigi Waites, renowned percussionist, one of Omaha's great
musical talents (he recently played his 1500th Sunday performance), and
leader of Luigi, Inc., Dan Cerveny, keyboardist, member of the Omaha Big Band and the Omaha Musicians' Association Jazz All-Stars, Mark Luebbe, bass player and member of the Omaha Musicians' Association Jazz All-Stars, and Jorge Nila, also from Omaha and leader of Jorge Nila and the Jazz Ninjas. We encourage questions from students. Each of the
musicians is also a committed and experienced teacher.

The second workshop session will focus on the subject of the history of
Jazz and its importance in music education. Again, each of the
musicians will give a short presentation, with or without music, and we
will encourage questions and discussion.

Lunch will be provided for you and your students at no charge on the
Creighton Campus. (Don't forget to register ahead of time.)

The afternoon panel discussion will occur in two sessions: 1 - 2:30 p.m.
and 3 - 4:30 p.m. The speakers (Victor Lewis, Richie Love, Luigi
Waites, Dan Cerveny, and Jorge Nila) will organize the two panels in
terms of their subjects, with each speaking for about fifteen minutes.
We hope that some of those who come will have their own stories to share
so that the afternoon becomes more like friends sharing stories rather
than an "academic" meeting.

The tentative topics to date:
Victor Lewis: "The Savoy Seven, Luigi Waites and the Contemporaries"
Jorge Nila: "Lessons Learned"
Luigi Waites: "Jazz as I See It Now and Then"
Richie Love: "Preston Love and the History of Omaha Jazz"

We also would like to invite you to come to the scholarship fundraiser
for the Preston Love Annual Scholarship. The event will begin at 6 p.m.
Richie Love and the Love Connection as well as the Preston Love
Orchestra will perform throughout the evening. Our visiting musicians
will also take part in the performances. The cost for this event is $25
per person or $40 per couple, a portion of which is tax-deductable.

We believe the entire day's events will be both instructive and
stimulating for your students. We hope to see you on September 20th.
If you have questions regarding any of the day's events, please feel
free to call (402) 280-2729 or email at gwzach@creighton.edu.
