Creighton University’s Second Annual Non-Western Cultural Event

"Seeking Peace: Poetic and Political Visions of the
Asian World"

April 11 to April 24, 2006

All events are free and open to the public

  1. April 11-25: Displays of translated Chinese, Korean, Japanese and American poems and exhibit of photographs by Gene Selk. Both will be at the Skutt Student Center.
  2. April 12 (Wed.): Poet Luye joins Ted Kooser, American Poet Laureate, in his activities at Creighton. (Time: 10:30 a.m. Location: Hitchcock/Communications Room 305)
  3. April 14 (Fri.): Easter Holiday. Poet Luye will join Professor Mary Helen Stefaniak and Professor Jinmei Yuan in their meeting with Mr. Christopher Merrill, director of the International Writing Program in Iowa City (off campus activity).
  4. April 18 (Tues.): Poet Luye will join Professors Susan Aizenberg (English/Creative Writing), and Jinmei Yuan (Philosophy) in Professor Brent Spencer’s Introductory Creative Writing class (English 300). Professors Spencer and Aizenberg will lead discussions on creative writing. (Time: 2:00 to 3:15 p. m. Location: Hixson-Lied Science Building 366)
  5. April 18 (Tues.): Brown Bag Lecture: "The Catholic Vision of Peace". Presenter: Fr. Dennis Hamm, S.J. Ph.D and Graff Chair of Catholic Theology. (Time: 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Location: Union Pacific Room)
  6. April 18 (Tues.): Creighton Martial Arts Club hosts Poet Luye for a Chinese movie evening. A Q&A section will follow the show of "The House of Flying Daggers." (Time: 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Location: Reinert Alumni Library, Room L02)
  7. April 19 (Wed.): Brown Bag Lecture: "Regional Economic Integration and Peaceful Evolution in Asia" (for COBA and Arts and Sciences Students). Presenters: Professor Lei-Da Chen, College of Business Administration, and Professor Maorong Jiang, Political Science and History. (Time: 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Location: Union Pacific Room)
  8. April 19 (Wed.): Creighton Asian Students Association hosts the Taiwan Night. Mr. Hong-Kai Mao and Professor Maorong Jiang will lead a discussion on the Taiwan problem in US-China relations after the Documentary: Tug of War, A Story of Taiwan. (Time: 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Location: Reinert Alumni Library, Room L02)
  9. April 19 (Wed.): Poet Luye joins Professor Susan Aizenberg in her Poetic Forms class (ENG 302) (Time: 3:30 to 4:20 p.m. Location: Humanities Center 315)
  10. April 19 (Wed.): Poet Luye joins Professor Mary Helen Stefaniak in her Creative Writing class (ENG 300) (Time: 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. Location: Hitchcock/Communications Arts 108)
  11. April 20 (Thursday Evening): A public "talk show style" dialogue with Dr. Dae-Sook Suh and Poet Luye: Seeking Peace: Poetic and Political Vision of the Asian World. (Time: 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. Location: Union Pacific Room)
  12. April 21 (Fri.): Brown Bag lecture: Conflict and Peace in the Korean Peninsula. Presenter: Dr. Dae-Sook Suh, Korean Politics Professor at UCLA. (Time: 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Location: Spillane Reading Room, Administration Building 430)
  13. April 24 (Mon.): Poet Luye joins Professor Aizenberg in her Poetic Forms class (ENG 302) (Time: 3:30 to 4:20 p.m. Location: Humanities Center 315)
  14. April 24 (Mon.): Poets Luye  and Susan Aizenberg will have a public reading of their work featuring poems and translations in both Chinese & English, along with translations of Luye’s poems by students enrolled in Creighton’s English department creative writing classes. (Time: 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. Location: Room 209, Skutt Student Center) Hitchcook/Communications Arts 108)
