Born in Tecumseh in 1904,CATHERINE LE MASTER ECKRICH
was a widely published poet and the author of Never Tell the Vision
(Bruce Humphries, 1951), a book of poetry. Carl Sandburg said of her work,
“I like the poems of Catherine Eckrich. Quietly and deliberately she frames large
implications.” Louise Pound, in her introduction to the book, said "To me the poems of
Catherine Eckrich, nearly all of which have seen print in various places, are a welcome
change from much of the poetry of today ... Rather are hers the universal subjects of poets
down the ages, life and death, humanity, beauty, scenes and landscape around her."
She was educated at the state universities of Nebraska and Minnesota, and spent a
year in France. Her mother was Inez Holmes, cousin of Oliver Wendell Holmes.
She married in her twenties and moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota, where she
spent the rest of her life. She also wrote scripts for radio and television,
which were broadcast over national networks both in the United Sates and Canada.
She was the great aunt of Nebraska writer John Philip Johnson, whom she encouraged to write
by giving him money to buy a copy of Writer's Market when he was twenty.
She died in 1986 and is buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
