Here's to poet, fiction writer, and essayist Carol Muske-Dukes, graduate of Creighton University, who has been appointed California's next poet laureate by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. She is the author of seven books of poetry, four novels, and two essay collections, including her most recent poetry collection, Sparrow, a finalist for the National Book Award. As poet laureate, she will promote poetry in various ways across the state. "Carol Muske-Dukes is a distinguished writer who has greatly influenced the world of literary arts in California and throughout the world," said Muriel Johnson, director of the California Arts Council, which recommended her to the governor. The position of poet laureate was created in 2001. The appointment, which must be approved by the state Senate, includes a $10,000 stipend and covers a term of two years. She has taught writing at the women's prison on Rikers Island and now teaches creative writing at the University of Southern California, where she founded the graduate program in literature and creative writing.
