Department of English
Portfolio Exemption for ENG 150
Because Creighton University values good writing, we invite you to submit a portfolio of your writing to be evaluated for a possible waiver for ENG 150: Rhetoric and Composition.
The cost to submit a portfolio will be $50.00, and students whose portfolios are rated as superior will gain a waiver (not credit) for ENG 150.
We ask for a portfolio instead of a more traditional timed exam because we believe that a portfolio of work that has been through all stages of the writing process, and which shows more of a student's ability to write more than one type of writing, is a better indicator of a student's writing ability.
So if you'd like to participate, you will need to do the following:
1. ASSEMBLE A PORTFOLIO.
The portfolio should contain the following materials:
A. A letter of introduction which introduces the information in the portfolio, you the writer, and discusses each piece in the portfolio.
B. A prose narrative of a personal experience, which also reflects on the significance of that event.
C. A piece of prose writing that reviews and/or critiques.
D. A piece of writing that is your choice; it may be one of the above types, or any other type or genre you choose.
The pieces of writing must be either written specifically for the portfolio or be substantial revisions of existing writing you've done, either in college or high school coursework or on your own. (We discourage submission of work which seems obviously unrevised or otherwise hastily chosen and submitted simply to "take a chance" or meet a deadline).
One of the papers must include all rough drafts, invention, brainstorming, revised versions--the evidence of the writing process. You are free to choose which of the papers this will be.
All names, identifying marks, teacher marks, or teacher comments should be removed from all pages of the portfolio. Only your social security number should appear on EACH page of EACH piece of writing.
The entire portfolio must be clipped together, with the enclosed Cover Sheet on the top.
2. SIGN THE AUTHORSHIP FORM AND HAVE IT SIGNED BY A TEACHER.
This is extremely important, and we can't process or rate a portfolio without it. With this form, both you and a teacher who knows your work assert that this is indeed your own work, and that no one has written it but you. If you are an entering first-year student, the Supervising Teacher must be a teacher from your high school. If you are currently enrolled at Creighton, the Supervising Teacher must be a teacher at Creighton who is familiar with your work. If you are a transfer student, the Supervising teacher must be a teacher from the school you are transferring from who is familiar with your work.
3. SEND THE PORTFOLIO TO US, WITH A CHECK FOR 50.00 BY THE DEADLINE.(March 1, for possible exemption the following fall).
Send it in an 8.5"x 11" envelope to:
2500 California Plaza
Omaha, Nebraska 68178
Portfolios that are incomplete will not be rated.
ALL PORTFOLIOS FOR EXEMPTION MUST HAVE ARRIVED IN THE CREIGHTON ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OFFICE BY THE RELEVANT DEADLINE.
SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS...
Does the portfolio have to be typed?
Yes, it does, as it will need to be photocopied (for reading by the raters only), and we need the most legible copies possible (exception: rough draft materials as noted in item 1 above).
May I submit photocopies of my papers?
Certainly. We ask, though, that you remove or cover all identifying marks, teacher's comments, etc., (see #1 above) before you photocopy the original.
Can I send some of the papers now, and the other materials later?
No, as we have a limited staff to file and coordinate the portfolio process, we must insist that all materials--papers, Authorship Form, Cover Sheet, and check for $50.00-- be sent at the same time in the same envelope. Incomplete submissions will not be read, and will be returned to the sender.
Can I get my portfolio back?
No; for this reason we ask that you keep copies of everything you send--papers, forms, etc.
May I e-mail my portfolio?
No, not at this time..
How long do the pieces of writing have to be?
This is a perennial question whose answer is complex. Generally we prefer to answer that each writing situation demands different lengths, and thus we would rather not impose lengths on your writing process. In general, though, we would say that a portfolio approaching or over 20 pages would tend to be too lengthy, while one much under 10 pages would tend to be too short.
What will happen next?
The portfolios will be rated anonymously by trained faculty. The names of students whose portfolios have been selected for exemption will be sent to the office of the Dean, Creighton College of Arts and Sciences, with the recommendation that they be granted a waiver for ENG 150, Rhetoric and Composition. Please note: submitting a portfolio is not a guarantee of, or implication of the likelihood of, a waiver; also, successful performance will earn a waiver for ENG 150, not credit for it (this means that you are exempted from the ENG 150 requirement, but will not be awarded any credit for it).
The results of the portfolio placement rating will be mailed to participants by the first day of class for the following long (i.e., fall or spring) term, so that those persons gaining a waiver may change their schedules accordingly. If you are already enrolled, or plan to enroll (or if your advisor tells you to enroll) for ENG 150, DO NOT drop the class, or refrain from registering for the class, until after the portfolio results are announced.
Thanks. If you have any further questions please write to: Portfolio, English Department, Creighton University, 2500 California Plaza, Omaha, NE 68178, or call 402/280-2822 and ask to speak with the Director of Composition. Or, you may send an email message (not a portfolio) to email@example.com. We'll be glad to answer your questions.
