M.A. in Literature

 

The literature track is the foundation of the graduate English curriculum. Combining period-specific seminars with foundation and practicum courses, this program of study may be used to develop strengths or explore new areas. Preparation for further study, a faculty ready to mentor, and opportunities for beginning professional success and distinction characterize this track.

I Required Foundation Courses (6 hours)

Eng. 600: Introduction to Graduate Study
Eng. 721: Seminar in Literary Criticism

II Eight Courses selected from the following (24 hours)

Eng. 701: Seminar in Medieval Literature
Eng. 703: Seminar in Renaissance Literature
Eng. 705: Seminar in Neoclassical Literature
Eng. 707: Seminar in Romantic Literature
Eng. 709: Seminar in Victorian Literature
Eng. 711: Seminar in American Literature to 1865
Eng. 713: Seminar in American Literature 1865-1914
Eng. 715: Seminar in 20th-Century English and American Literature
Eng. 722: Seminar in Rhetorical Theory
ENG 723 Topics in Technology and Rhetoric
ENG 724 Topics in Rhetoric and Composition Pedagogy

(On petition, the candidate may substitute up to two Studies courses in lieu of seminar requirements.)

III Required Capstone Courses (6 hours)

Eng. 798: Master's Thesis or Three-Paper Option
Supervised Teaching Practicum (one of the following): Eng. 680, 681, 682, 683 (click for more information)

IV Additional Requirements

Comprehensive Examination
(Reading competence in a second language is strongly recommended but not required)
