Short James Forum, Henry James Review
Praised—and mocked—for his drawn-out sentences and
lengthy works, Henry James nonetheless began his career with short forms of
writing to which he returned throughout his life. Some of these, like “The Turn of the Screw,”
have received intense critical scrutiny.
But many of James’s novellas and short stories, especially the early
ones, are rarely read.
The Henry
James Review’s 2008 Forum issue will focus on these texts. In addition to
essays treating any and all aspects of James’s shorter fictions, we invite a
range of contributions on “Short James,” including:
James’s
fragments, reviews, sketches, notebook entries, and letters
Ellipses,
slang, epigrams, interruptions; undeveloped “germs,” plots, or characters
Truncated
relations
Jamesian moments
Short
fiction influenced by or depicting James
Short
films based on James texts
Contributions should be submitted in duplicate and
produced according to MLA style. Please enclose a cover letter identifying your
manuscript as a Forum submission. Also include return postage. One-page
proposals or short (10-12 pages) essays should be sent by March 1, 2008,
to:
