Born November 6, 1936, in Lincoln, ROGER WELSCH is a humorist,
folklorist, and essayist. He is
the author of many books, including
From Tinkering to Torquing: A Beginner's Guide to Tractors and Tools;
Love, Sex, and Tractors;
Touching the Fire: Buffalo Dancers, the Sky
Bundle, and Other Tales; It's not the End of the World, But You Can
See
It From Here;
Busted Tractors and Rusty Knuck;
Old Tractors and the
Men Who Love Them; Diggin' In and
Piggin' Out; and his most recent,
A Life with Dogs.
In addition to his books and scholarly publications, his work has appeared
in
Natural History Magazine, Readers Digest, Esquire Gentleman,
Successful Farming, and elsewhere.
He is a past recipient of the Mari Sandoz
Award and the
1996 Man of the Year In Service to Nebraska Agriculture. His
"Postcard from Nebraska" is a bi-weekly feature on CBS's
Sunday Morning. He is also the host of "Roger &..." on Nebraska
Public
Television. He was educated at the University of Nebraska (BA, 1958, MA,
1960), the University of Colorado (1962),
and Indiana University (1963-64). He has taught at Dana College,
University of
Nebraska at Lincoln, and Nebraska Wesleyan University.
Starting in 1974, he was a field operative for Smithsonian Institution,
lecturing on folklore and conducting programs on folklore and folk music.
He lives on a small tree farm outside Dannebrog with his wife,
Linda and daughter, Antonia.
In 1967, he was adopted ionto the Omaha Tribe and maintains strong ties to
the tribe and to the Native American Church. In 1995, he was designated a
Tribal Friend by the Pawnee.
