LYNN DENAEYER MESSERSMITH ranches in Cherry County, where she works as a freelance writer and a regular columnist for Midland News and Nebraska Life. Her first book of poetry was Downwind from the Smoke. Her second, Ground Tied, won a Will Rogers Medallion Award in 2004 from the Academy of Western Artists, and her work has been included in several anthologies. She appears with Deb Carpenter on a CD called The Heart's Compass, presenting music and poetry in the voices of pioneer women. The book and CD are available through the Nebraska Humanities Council and the Nebraska Art Council. She divides her time between the original family homestead in Cherry County and a home with her husband Bruce, who ranches in rural Sheridan County.
