Poet, essayist, story writer, and editor MARK SANDERS is a Nebraska native, born in Creighton in 1955 and raised on the eastern rim of the Sandhills in Ord. He holds a BA and MA in English from Kearney State College, and a PhD in Modern Poetry from the University of Nebraska — Lincoln. He has taught in Nebraska high schools and at Southwest Missouri State University, Tarkio College, the University of Nebraska — Lincoln, Nebraska Wesleyan University, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, College of the Mainland, and as a visiting Graduate Professor at the University of Houston — Clear Lake. He now teaches at Lewis Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho, where he is Professor of English and the Director of the Publishing Arts Program. His poems, stories, and essays have been published in journals in the US, Canada, Great Britain, and Australia. His creative prose has appeared in such journals as Glimmer Train, Shenandoah, South Dakota Review, North Dakota Quarterly, and River Teeth, and among the journals that have published his poems are Prairie Schooner, Poetry East, Tar River Poetry, Midwest Quarterly, Dalhousie Review, Poetry Wales, and numerous others. His edited works include the Plains Poetry Series; On Common Ground: The Poetry of William Kloefkorn, Ted Kooser, Greg Kuzma, and Don Welch; The Sandhills & Other Geographies: An Anthology of Nebraska Poetry; and The Decade Dance: A Celebration of Poems. His first full-length book of poems was Before We Lost Our Ways, published by Hurãkan Press/College of the Mainland, in 1996. A collection of stories, A Dissimulation of Birds, was published by Crane Editions in 2002, and Here in the Big Empty, his second full-length collection of poems, was published in 2006 by Backwaters Press. Book artisan Harry Duncan published his The Suicide in 1988. He has been the editor of Sandhills Press since 1979, which includes the imprints Main-Traveled Roads Press and (with his wife Kimberly Verhines as Series Editor) Lewis-Clark Press. One of Sanders' stories, published in Glimmer Train, was given honorable mention as one of "100 other outstanding stories in 2006" in the 2007 edition of Best American Short Stories, edited by Stephen King; he is also the 2007 recipient of the Mildred Bennett Award from the Nebraska Center for the Book.
