Mari Sandoz Heritage Society
Annual Conference March 21-24, 2001
The focus of this year’s annual conference of the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society is the author’s
These Were the Sioux. Philip Deloria, author of Playing Indian, an account of the
ways that Indian cultures have been appropriate by mainstream society, will open the conference.
On Friday, papers on Sandoz’s book and on the history of Sioux reservation life will be presented.
Also included in the conference will be a presentation by archivist Brad Retchless, who will speak
about Sandoz’s writing process in writing Old Jules. Two special events will take place, a
symbolic ground-breaking for the construction of the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center,
which will begin actual construction in April, and dedication of Highway 79 as the Mari Sandoz
Sandhills Trail. It’s a great way to celebrate this remarkable Nebraska writer. For more information, all 308.432.6276.
