Poet MEL KRUTZ
is the author of various chapters, articles, and presentations
on composition, children's literature, cognition and literary
development, learning and teaching styles, reading, censorship issues,
and poetry. In Nebraska her poetry and some prose can be found in
Plainsongs; Fine Lines; The Nebraska English Counselor; Plain Song
Review; Times of Sorrow/Times of Grace; Rural Voices: Literature from
Rural Nebraska; A Journey to the Source of the Platte; A Journey Not

A retired professor of English and education, Dr Krutz taught
composition, literature, and education courses; taught community writing
courses; and began several writing groups. She serves as a judge in
Nebraska for Letters About Literature, a national contest out of the
National Center for the Book at the Library of Congress. She was
Chairman Pro Tem of the National Council of Teachers of English
Committee Against Censorship; Organizing Chair of the Academic Freedom
Coalition of Nebraska in 1988, and its president again in 1998;
co-founder and director of The Nebraska Writing and Storytelling
Festival most of its thirteen years, 1980-1993, and editor of several of
its eleven volumes of writings by Nebraskans. She was on the staff of
Journey to the Source of the Platte for two summer sessions with Will
Lock and Bill Kloefkorn; held various offices on the Nebraska
English/Language Arts Council; was a Lied Center for the Performing Arts
volunteer; and reviewed books for the Nebraska Library Commission, the
Lincoln Journal Star, and other places. She served also on the board
and as chair of the Nebraska Literary Heritage Association, on the board
of the Nebraska Center for the Book and as secretary, and this year as
president elect; and has been a member of several national
organizations. Her graduate degrees are from UNL.
