NCW: In short, why Nebraska?WS: Why Nebraska? Do you mean why the mighty Missouri? Why the lazy sprawl of the Platte lit by the stars of a summer night? Why the other-wordly beauty of the Sandhills? Better to ask why not Nebraska? The state has been so kind to me that I feel like half a Nebraskan myself. Just call me the sweet swan of the Missouri. Kind of has a ring to it, no? NCW: How has the state been kind to you? WS: Don't get me started! How do I love Nebraska? Let me count the ways! Nebraska is a haven for writers and actors. Many times have her players trod the boards on my behalf. It gives a poor scribe pause. This year, Omaha's Shakespeare on the Green, is doing Two Gentlemen of Verona and The Tempest. Little-known fact: the original title was Two Gentlemen of Ogallala. Go figure! For information about show times, etc., dance your fingers over to the Nebraska Shakespeare Festival's web site. Tell'em Bill sent ya! NCW: What about elsewhere in Nebraska? WS: And then there's Bob Hall's production of Much Ado About Nothing down in Lincoln. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Check your local papers for other productions. Summertime is Shakespeare time! NCW: So you're saying Nebraska is especially welcoming to writers like yourself? WS: I tell you, when it comes to Nebraska, Bill Shakespeare's in the house! Or, actually, out of the house, since Omaha performances are being held outdoors at Elmwood Park and Lincoln's are in the outdoor theater at Wyuka Cemetery.
