BRYAN L JONES'S most recent book,
Mark Twain Made Me Do It & Other Plains Adventures (U of Nebraska
P, 1997), explores the Nebraska of the 1950s. Essays on the polio
epidemic of 1952 and Richie Ashburn and small-town baseball provide
the historic backdrop to the story of a wide-eyed boy exploring the
limits of his universe.
The Farming Game, Jones's first book of humorous essays, is still in
print. The first book originally published by the University of Nebraska
Press to be reviewed in The New York Times, it
continues to enjoy a wide following. Jones, a reading teacher at McCook
Junior High, grew up in several Nebraska towns, including Chappell, Geneva,
and Neligh. After graduating from Roosevelt University in Chicago
and spending a year in graduate school at the University of New Orleans,
Jones returned to Nebraska.
He has farmed, taught school, worked as a journalist and as a public
speaker. He
was awarded a Council for Basic Education Fellowship in 1994 to research
some of the
lesser known figures of the American Civil Rights Movement. He has recently
been a columnist for Teacher and Nebraska Life magazines.
