On September 18, 1931 Angelika (Geli) Raubal, the niece of Adolf Hitler, was found dead in her room in her uncle's flat, his pistol lying nearby. For the Nazis, the death represented a most unfortunate dilemma. If she was a murder victim, then the Fuhrer would likely be a prime suspect. If she was a suicide, there could be embarrassing questions about why she decided to take her own life — especially since she and her uncle seemed to have such a "close" relationship.
