In addition to writing poetry, LIZ AHL collects typewriters and
makes books (she's the editor and
publisher of Ultima Obscura Press).
She holds a BFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College, the MFA in
poetry
from University of Pittsburgh, and the PhD in poetry writing and
20th-century literature from the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
where she taught creative writing, composition, and literature, and serves
as an editorial
assistant for Prairie Schooner.
She is the
author, with
Chauna Craig, of Time is Thirsty (Ultima Obscura,
1997).
Her work has appeared in Crab Orchard Review, The American Voice, The
Formalist,
Southern Poetry Review, The Pittsburgh Quarterly, 5AM, Sundog, and elsewhere.
She's taught for several summers at the University of Virginia Young
Writer's
Workshop, and she's taught adult workshops at the Pittsburgh Center for
the Arts. Also in Pittsburgh, she taught poetry workshops to the clients
at Western Psychiatric Institute's Schizophrenic Treatment and Research
Center. Currently she teaches creative writing and literature at
Plymouth State College in New Hampshire.
She was a founding member of Pittsburgh's
Poetry & Drum Ensemble,
a performance collaborative of poets and musicians.
She wonders about time and distance,
about the volcano, about music, about what it means to be a gal.
